Red Light Therapy
Red Light Therapy for Pain, Inflammation, and Tissue Recovery
At Lumos, we believe women's healthcare should consider the whole person—not just an individual symptom. Red light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, is a noninvasive modality that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to interact with tissues in the body.
Lumos offers red light therapy as a supportive option that may complement individualized chiropractic care, pelvic floor rehabilitation, and musculoskeletal wellness services.
What is red light therapy?
Red light therapy uses specific wavelengths of light that interact with biological tissues. Depending on the wavelength, treatment parameters, and tissue being targeted, photobiomodulation may influence cellular signaling and processes associated with tissue function and recovery.
Lumos uses a Hooga red light therapy panel that delivers red and near-infrared light. Red light is generally associated with more superficial tissue applications, while near-infrared wavelengths can penetrate farther into tissue.
Research into photobiomodulation continues to evolve. Evidence varies by condition, and outcomes depend on factors such as wavelength, dosage, treatment duration, and the individual receiving care.
Potential benefits of photobiomodulation
Research has investigated photobiomodulation across several areas of health and rehabilitation. Depending on the application, potential benefits may include:
Supporting the body's normal tissue-repair processes
Helping manage certain types of pain
Supporting recovery in select musculoskeletal conditions
Supporting skin and tissue health in specific applications
These potential benefits are not guaranteed, and evidence for one condition does not necessarily apply to another. Red light therapy is not a cure-all or a replacement for appropriate medical evaluation and treatment.
Red light therapy at Lumos
At Lumos, red light therapy may be considered as an adjunct to your broader care plan. Your needs, goals, health history, and the area being treated help determine whether it is an appropriate option. For patients receiving chiropractic or musculoskeletal care, photobiomodulation may be considered as a complementary modality when appropriate. Research has explored its potential role in certain pain and recovery applications, although results vary by condition and treatment protocol.
Pelvic floor rehabilitation
Pelvic floor concerns can involve more than muscle strength alone. Depending on your presentation, your care plan may address muscle coordination, mobility, pain, and functional goals.
Red light therapy may be discussed as a complementary modality when appropriate, but it is not a replacement for a pelvic floor assessment or individualized rehabilitation. Evidence specific to pelvic floor conditions remains limited, and benefits should not be assumed.
What to expect during a session
Your provider will discuss your goals and determine whether red light therapy is appropriate for you. If included in your care plan, your session will follow the device's safety instructions and the treatment parameters selected for your needs.
Depending on the treatment area, you may be positioned near the light panel for a specified period. Appropriate eye protection and other precautions will be followed according to the device instructions and your clinical needs.
Red light therapy is noninvasive and does not involve needles or electrical stimulation. You should not assume that a session will produce an immediate or noticeable result; responses vary between individuals.
Is red light therapy right for me?
Red light therapy may be an option for some patients, but it is not suitable for everyone or every condition. Before treatment, let your provider know about relevant medical conditions, pregnancy, a history of cancer in the treatment area, eye conditions, or medications and products that increase sensitivity to light.
Your provider can help determine whether additional precautions, medical clearance, or a different approach is appropriate. Red light therapy should not delay evaluation of new, persistent, or worsening symptoms.
